Survey finds Ramadan a time for spirituality
"What does Ramadan mean to you?"

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is first and foremost a time for spirituality and purity, according to survey results released today (2nd September 2010) by SingleMuslim.com, the world's leading internet-based matrimonial service for the Muslim community.

SingleMuslim.com, an interactive community of more than 500,000 members seeking potential marriage partners, polled its members to find out what Ramadan means to them.

25.66% of the site’s members view Ramadan as a time to seek forgiveness from Allah, whilst a further 21.95% see the month of fasting as a spiritual journey. 12.57% associate Ramadan with purification from evil, and 12.72% see Ramadan as a time for prayer, contemplation and visiting the mosque.

Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting, when Muslims abstain from drinking and eating between the hours of dawn and sunset. It marks a period of reflection, as Muslims strive to cleanse their souls and be more spiritual through their own self-discipline and sacrifice.

Adeem Younis, Managing Director of SingleMuslim.com, said: "We were delighted to see such a positive response from our members. The vast majority of our members clearly associate Ramadan with a time for believing and worshiping Allah, for being pure in thought and deed, and for spending time in prayer."

Only 1.21% of the site’s members said that they associated Ramadan with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festival that breaks the fast and marks the purification of the soul.

Eid al-Fitr is always eagerly anticipated during the month of Ramadan. It is a joyous occasion and a real cause for celebration, but the results of the survey clearly show that spirituality, restraint and purity are uppermost in people’s minds during Ramadan.

However, as Muslims around the world prepare to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, it is impossible to escape the reality of the humanitarian disaster that has unfolded in Pakistan over the last month.

Adeem added: "The flooding in Pakistan reminds us that Ramadan is also a time for charity, for recognising that there are many millions of people who are in need of food, water, and many other things that we often take for granted. The scale of the devastation has touched us all and our thoughts and prayers remain with the people of Pakistan at this time.

"The Muslim community has already responded magnificently in terms of the charitable donations it has raised, but there is so much more we can do. Donations can still be made via organisations such as PennyAppeal (www.pennyappeal.org) SingleMuslim.com's sponsored charity."
